5 Comedy Horror Movies To Watch On Halloween

Due to Corona you don’t want to go outside on Halloween? Instead you want to do a movie marathon? Concerning movies you like to get scared but at the same time you like to laugh? You’re a little annoyed right now because I’m asking so many questions? Then here are the five horror comedy movies to watch on Halloween.

1. The Monster Squad

Are you a fan of old horror movies like “Frankenstein” by Universal Pictures or do you like the web series “Stranger Things”? In “The Monster Squad” you can have them both. When Count Dracula, the Mummy, Frankenstein’s monster and a werewolf attack their hometown, a young group of monster fanatics attempt to save their families and friends. When you watch the film you will laugh, you will be terrified and during the last scenes you may even cry a little bit. But in the end you will always remember: Wolfman’s got nards!

Director: Fred Dekker
Stars: Andre Gower, Robby Kiger, Stephen Macht
Year: 1987

2. Beetlejuice

When a new family has moved into their home, the ghosts of a deceased couple hire a malicious spirit named “Betelgeuse” (pronounced and occasionally spelled “Beetlejuice” in the movie) to scare them away. I think you can call the movie a horror comedy film although Michael Keaton calls it a “black comedy”. It has the typical Tim Burton aesthetics and was one of the first movies of the fabulous Winona Ryder. She also has one of my favorite quotes in the movie, because “I myself, am strange and unusual” too.

Director: Tim Burton
Stars: Michael Keaton, Alec Baldwin, Geena Davis, Winona Ryder
Year: 1988

3. The Evil Dead (and Evil Dead II)

I think everyone knows this one (because of the terrible remake probably). Although the first “Evil Dead” movie is a classic horror film, the second part “Evil Dead II” has a lot of comedy. In the first movie a group of friends travel to a cabin in the woods (never a good idea) where they read from an ancient book and unknowingly release flesh-possessing demons. In the second part you only see the main character Ashley “Ash” J. Williams basically… well, basically just hitting himself. The movies also got a sequel with the series “Ash vs Evil Dead” that picks up on the funny elements of the second movie. Ah, just watch them all!

Director: Sam Raimi
Actors: Bruce Campbell, Ellen Sandweiss, Richard DeManincor
Years: 1981/1987/2015-2018

4. The Addams Family (and Addams Family Values)

“The Addams Family” is a horror comedy film based on characters by cartoonist Charles Addams. The movie tells the story of a bizarre, aristocratic family who reconnect with who they believe to be their long lost uncle. But their “uncle” is actually a con artist who intends to swindle the family out of their wealth and fortune. I personally prefer the second part “Addams Family Values” because the humor is more macabre.

Director: Barry Sonnenfeld
Stars: Anjelica Huston, Raul Julia, Christopher Lloyd, Christina Ricci
Years: 1991/1993

5. Killer Klowns From Outer Space

The movie “Killer Klowns From Outer Space” is about a group of evil aliens from an unknown planet who all look like circus clowns. They arrive on earth and terrorize a small town in order to capture, kill, and harvest the human inhabitants to use as sustenance. The movie is being considered now a cult classic because of the use of practical effects and its general absurdity that give the film an enduring appeal.

Directors: The Chiodo Brothers
Stars: Grant Cramer, Suzanne Snyder, John Allen Nelson
Year: 1988

Only now I realize that most of the movies I recommended are from the 80s. I like horror movies from the 80s because the special effects are not so CGI-ed like in horror movies today. Also these movies have a lot of charming characters and black comedy in them.
